Abstract

This work aims to present and discuss the views of Descartes and Leibniz on the method of philosophy, especially in metaphysical investigations. Departing from an examination of the Cartesian method, which takes Euclidean geometry as a paradigmatic model, directly linked, in philosophy, to ordinary language, we present the Leibnizian idea of a philosophical characteristic being an alternative to this model. Through this, we aim to show that Leibniz's methodological alternative represents the replacement of the geometric model by the algebraic model, and that such substitution is directly linked to the role attributed by the author to the use of signs in thought in general.
