The “performance society” in Byung-Chul Han’s perspective

About the possibility of approaching Immanuel Kant’s theory through the concepts of “autonomy” and “freedom”

Abstract

The purpose of this article is to present the notion of “performance society” and its main characteristics in the reflections of the South Korean philosopher Byung-Chul Han. On the basis of its excess of positivity, the “society of transparency” brings with it numerous problems highlighted by the author. Here we will work with two of them: the problem of over-positivity and the problem of pornography. From them, we will also try to present the solutions proposed to them in the perspective used by the author. In the view of the coercive nature of the concepts of “freedom” and “autonomy” presented by Han, we will try to draw a parallel from the dialogical aspect with the German philosopher Immanuel Kant in order to better understand the current society in which lives the modern individual, based on the consequences of the neoliberal capitalist system.
