John of Salisbury. Ruler. Tyrant. Law. Tyrannicide.Abstract
The Policraticus of John of Salisbury (ca.1120-1180) represents one of the
fundamental texts of the medieval era. Written in the renaissance style
of the twelfth century, it has generated controversy since its publication
by its doctrines, among them: the defense of right to slay a tyrant. The
present study aims to make a contribution to this discussion, showing that
while it is possible to point out some shortcomings in its argument, his
defense of tyrannicide is consonant with elements of his political thought.
In this perspective, we aim to show: (i) the right of civil resistance and
to slay the tyrant; (ii) a brief remarks on Salisbury’s position. To do this
we use the books III, IV, V and VIII of Policraticus.
