Abstract

The figure of Spinoza, in his mad dream of wanting to develop a total philosophy “in accordance with the order of geometry”, as if this order were intangible and fixed once and for all, crystallizes the doubts especially well to which the spirit of system might give rise. Not only does the latter represent a caricature of a metaphysics that would like to pass itself off as science, but this science appears as a caricature of an arrogant rationality that is folded unto itself. Explaining in which way one can make claims today for this spirit, without falling back onto such criticism: this is my main objective in this essay.
