Abstract

The aim of this article is to show Duhem as a forerunner of Popper, Kuhn and Lakatos in relation to the development of a model of rational choice of theories. He proposes a methodological model  with extra logical elements. He splits the application of the model into two different stages, refutation and rejection, and concludes that choice results from the confrontation between two theories and nature rather than just one theory and nature. The formulation of the model also reveals the methodological characteristic of an interplay between history and theory of science. This interplay forms the laboratory from which he develops his metaphysical and methodological thesis and the rules that make up his theory of science.
