The anthropology of Ireneu of Lyon as a counterpoint to the gnostic vision of human being

Abstract

Ireneu of Lião developed his theology to refute the thought of the Gnostics who distorted the Scriptures and taught that there were three types of human being: hylic, psychic and spiritual. Ireneu dedicated himself to knowing their doctrine, studied their thought in detail, and sought to present the Christian doctrine, based on the Tradition of the apostles and Scripture. Ireneu’s anthropology is biblical, optimistic, and according to him, the human being is a unity of body, soul and spirit. Furthermore, the human being was created by God to have the vision of God one day, that is, to achieve divinization.
