Vocational interests and socioeconomic characteristics of students in high school

Abstract

The vocational interests to be understood as the preference of the person for certain types of activities over others. Can be said that the physical and social environment contributes to the development of various interests. The study investigated the vocational interests of teenagers, considering the socioeconomic and educational level of parents. Was used a questionnaire socio-demographic and ‘Escala de Aconselhamento Profissional’ (EAP). 101 students participated from 3rd year of high school to a private school in the southern region of the country, 46,8% of males and 53,2% female, with age between 14 and 18 years old. The results shower significant correlations for the dimensions ‘Ciências Exatas’ and ‘Atividades Burocráticas’, in relation to number of goods; ‘Ciências Biológicas e da Saúde’ and ‘Ciências Humanas e Sociais’, referring to the monthly income; ‘Ciências Exatas’ as the years studied and the course conducted by father; and finally, ‘Ciências Agrárias e Ambientais’, in the course of professional mothers.
