Abstract

Provenance encompasses the entire lifecycle of a document since its manufacture, encompassing all technical, political and social details. It is usually expressed through a chronology of ownership, custody or location of an object. Including names and other contextual information of interest to historians. This article aims to highlight provenance research and its applicability to the use of historical sources and will deal with provenance research under three aspects: a) provenance marks as a historical source; b) the research of provenance as a basic requirement of the historian to prove the veracity of the sources used to build his narrative; and c) the use of provenance research as a way to carry out critical analysis of the source. Data collection for the construction of this article was based on a bibliographical and documental review, carried out in national and foreign sources, available in both physical and digital formats, with a non-exhaustive exploratory method and a qualitative approach. Given the different and possible circumstances presented by the provenance research, the importance of studies on the provenance of historical sources is highlighted, as they are historical sources, for the knowledge of their history as a material object and for the enhancement and strengthening of narratives constructed by historians.
