Abstract

This study seeks to identify the influence of demographic variables on the
perception of managerial competence. This is a quantitative study, in which data were collected using the electronic questionnaire based on literature review. Answers came from students and ex-students of postgraduate courses in administration in a university located in state of Paraná-Brazil. The main results can be noted: (1) the existence of statistically significant differences in perceptions in the majority of managerial competence considering gender as variable; (2) age as variable showed no evidence of correlation; and (3) professional experience as variable demonstrated a negative correlation only with the competence named Innovative Management. The main contribution of this article arises in, among the surveyed demographic variables, gender is the variable that correlates with the perception of the construct managerial competence, demonstrating the importance of debates on gender issues in organizations. From this finding, we can start thinking about the tools and competency models that have been adopted in organizations, and consider whether or not in such instruments the existence of differences in perceptions between men and women. Such models would be biased in its construction not considering the differences in perceptions between genders? Future studies in this field could allow understanding and articulation of different meanings within the process of sense-making between men and women.
