Subjective time perception of emotional words

Abstract

The study aimed to analyze the subjective time perception words with emotional content. For this, 63 participants carried out a temporal bisection task with nouns of emotional valence: neutral (low arousal); positive (low arousal), divided into basic (Happiness) and social emotions (Gratitude); and negative (high arousal), divided into basic (Anger) and social emotions (Shame). Psychometric functions were obtained from temporal judgments and the bisection point was calculated. The results revealed a temporal overestimation in all conditions, but no statistically signifi cant diff erences were found among them, with the exception of a greater temporal distortion for the words in the Anger group compared to the words in the Shame group. These fi ndings corroborate previous studies on the perception of time with words as emotional stimuli and showed evidence to support the bottom-up/top-down model. Thus, this study provides theoretical and methodological insights to understand the mechanisms underlying processing of emotional words and time perception.
