On the social accumulation of violence in Rio de Janeiro

Abstract

This article was originally presented as conference at Brazilian Academy of Letters on July 3, 2008. The “social accumulation of violence” refers to a social process that has lasted nearly half a century or so. It may be historically limited, until now, between the 50’s and the present day. This process occurs in Rio de Janeiro and its immediate area of influence – the metropolitan region of Rio – but may in some instances, reach other cities in the state, some capitals of other states and other Brazilian cities, as has already happened, acquiring potentially national coverage. But has similarities with the case of Rio, is defined by always share with Rio some common dimensions, which local development emphasizes their differences. They are presented here, in general, the results achieved in the author’s research on this process in Rio de Janeiro.
