Abstract

The woods at riverbanks have influence on the water bodies in several ways and the removal of these woods causes harm to both human beings and nature. With the objective to know the arboreal species from the Woods at the Riverbank of the hydrographic basin of the Lajeado Tunas River in Frederico Westphalen (27º18’87”S and 53º21’72”W), a study was conducted in order to identify and list the vegetation found between August 2002 and June 2006, by using the method called Caminhamento. There were 89 arboreal species identified at the riverbank, sorted into 30 families. The most representative family was the Fabaceae with 15 species, followed by the Myrtaceae with 10, the Euphorbiaceae and the Rutaceae with 7 each and the Sapindaceae with 6. The basin has the size of 649,63ha, being 86,52 ha APPs. In 48,45ha from these APPs there are woods at the riverbank. The farming activities associated to burning and forest cutting are pointed out as the main causes of the forest fragmentation and the degradation of the ecosystems associated to the hydrographic basins. This list generates information about the species that can be used to recover the woods at the riverbanks of the hydrographic basin of the Lajeado Tunas River, it provides information on the Woods at the riverbanks of the Alto Uruguai, and besides that it also may be useful as a database for further studies.
