Abstract

Month surveys were realized aiming to investigate the relation among urban birds and the availability of resources offered by flora and by human buildings to nesting at different environments found at Morro do Espelho, in São Leopoldo, The area was divided in eight environments, within which were demarcated a 2 ha area, divided in ten 200m² quadrants (10m x 20m). Were registered the total of 67 nests of 17 bird species distributed among the studied environments. The nesting species found were classified in ten families and five feeding guilds. The area 6 (L6) was the environment with the greater number of nests (38,81% from total), while area 4 (L4) registered only 1,49% from observed nests. L6 was also the environment with greater number of nesting species (58,82%). This fact may be explained by the vegetation structural characteristics in this area and by the quantity of food resource offered in this environment. The specie with the greater number of nests was Furnarius rufus (representing 16,42% from nesting species), fallowed by Troglodites musculus (11,94%). It is presumed that the community of nesting birds in urban environments is dependent of species adaptability as well as available food and competition among similar species.
