Dossier: Portuguese as an Additional Language: Linguistics and Translation

According to the United Nations (UN), it is estimated that the number of people who speak Portuguese should exceed 400 million by 2050. This is due to the process of internationalization of the Portuguese language (PL), which was intensified from the its inclusion in the Critical Languages of the United States of America (USA) framework. As a result, Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL) now occupies a greater space in universities and companies in the USA, given the federal incentive to improve higher education students in PAL studies. Consequently, this process directly impacts the world economy, given the exponentiality of the USA vis-à-vis it. At the International Conference of Portuguese and Spanish Languages, held in 2019, the Constitutive Declaration of the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP) reaffirms the importance of PL as “a privileged means of disseminating cultural creation among the peoples who speak it and of international projection cultural values, in an open and universalistic perspective ”. Due to the growing demand of the language market, discussions about PAL in the academic field have gained great notoriety in recent years. Currently, the research produced in the areas of linguistics and translation make use of different study configurations for the investigation of PAL and Lusophone cultures and, thus, try to point out new theoretical paths. In order to promote and disseminate research in this context, the Letras de Hoje journal (Qualis / Capes B1), from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS), invites researchers in the field of Linguistics and Translation to participate in its thematic dossier entitled Portuguese as an Additional Language: Linguistics and Translation. Contributions may reflect on the following themes:

  • Teaching Portuguese as an Additional Language (PAL): strategies and challenges;
  • PAL acquisition and learning;
  • Analysis and preparation of proficiency tests in PAL;
  • PAL translation and interpretation.

The texts must be unpublished, in Portuguese, English or Spanish, and must be submitted to the journal by May 20, 2020, through the official website of Letras de Hoje: https://revistaseletronicas.pucrs.br/ojs/index.php/fale/index
