Assistance program for the feeding of hospitalized adults: quasi-experimental study

Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an assistance program for the feeding of hospitalized patients.
Materials and Methods: Quasi-experimental study performed among adults from a medium-sized hospital. We evaluated the percentage intake of breakfast, collation and lunch between two groups: voluntary assistance for feeding and without assistance for feeding. We considered as 100% patients who ingested all, 75% ingested ¾, 50% ingested half, 25% ingested ¼ and 0% did not ingest anything. Nutritional status was assessed by the body mass index (BMI) and percentage of weight loss, as well as the measurement of the arm circumference and calf, at baseline and every seven days. The ethics committee of UNILASALLE/Canoas approved the study.
Results: 90 subjects were enrolled, 45 allocated in each group. 46.7% were male with mean age of 67.5±15.7 years. At the final visit there were more malnourished patients in the group without assistance (p=0.03). On the fourteenth day of follow-up, the group with the volunteer help ingested 67% versus 55% in the unassisted group (p=0.014). The reasons that lead patients to fasting were not accepting the offered meal (61.1%) and therapeutic fasting (29%).
Conclusion: The assistance program for feeding showed quantitative increase in food intake percentages in most days, but statistically significant, in the ninth and tenth day of monitoring.
