Objective: This study aimed to verify the prevalence and resistance profile of bacteria isolated in urine cultures against antibiotics commonly used in community outpatient individuals.
Material and Methods: A documentary retrospective study with a qualitative approach based on the analysis of 55 medical records of examinations conducted between the months of June 2014 to June 2016, in a city in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil.
Results: From the 616 records, 55 (9%) of the cases were identified as significant bacteriuria. The main pathogen present in urine cultures was Escherichia coli 70% (38) followed by Staphylococcus aureus 21% (12) and Enterobacter spp. 9% (5). Female patients were more affected representing 87% (48) cases. Regarding the age group, there was a higher prevalence of significant bacteriuria among individuals aged between 61 and 80 years, 40% (22). On the resistance profiles, 29% of E. coli were resistant to sulfamethoxazoletrimethropim, 17% of S. aureus were resistant to nitrofurantoin and sulfamethoxazole-trimethropim antimicrobials and 40% (2) of Enterobacter spp. showed high clindamycin resistance.
Conclusion: Results shown in this study indicate a high prevalence of significant bacteriuria in women, as well as in an age group between 61 and 80 years. The main causative pathogen found was E. coli, followed by S. aureus and Enterobacter spp. In relation to antibiotics, a high resistance index was observed for Enterobacter spp., followed by E. coli and S. aureus.
