Objective: To verify the relationship between the perception of the body image and the body mass index of rural workers.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out with 140 rural workers from the municipalities of Santa Cruz do Sul, Vale Verde, Passo do Sobrado, Candelária, Encruzilhada do Sul, Pantano Grande, Rio Pardo and General Câmara. Demographic variables such as sex, age, marital status and economic classification were verified. Body weight and height were measured for the body mass index variable and data on body image satisfaction were collected through the nine Stunkard scale. For the characterization of the sample, fat percentage, waist circumference, hip circumference, hip waist ratio were evaluated.
Results: There was a difference in the choice of the current body image in the responses according to their nutritional status, in both sexes. There was lower satisfaction with body image, more prevalent among women (84.1%) who were overweight, than among men (48.1%).
Conclusion: The high prevalence of overweight and obese women who wished to have a smaller silhouette when compared to the real BMI, indicates a concern to reach a healthier BMI silhouette, suggesting the need for further study.
