Introduction: Hepatitis A is an infectious disease that reflects the health conditions of the population and should therefore be in constant monitoring.
Objective: To analyze factors associated with cases of hepatitis A reported in the Notifiable Diseases Information System (SINAN) in the State of Bahia, in the year 2014. The prevalence of this disease was estimated, pointing its relationship with the sociodemographic characteristics and identifying the main sources of associated infections.
Materials and Methods: This is an epidemiological cross-sectional study of exploratory character whose locus was the State of Bahia. All cases of viral hepatitis reported in SINAN in the year 2014 were included in the study. A bivariate and univariate descriptive analysis was realized.
Results: The prevalence of viral hepatitis type A was estimated to be 29.9%. The variables associated with hepatitis A were complete and incomplete elementary education, the age group under 19, the sources of home infection, person to person and contaminated food or water; hemodialysis; to be non-vaccinated for hepatitis A, to present anti-HBs serology reactant and inconclusive and to present anti-HCV serology inconclusive and unreacted.
Conclusion: In conclusion, hepatitis A was associated with sociodemographic characteristics, both individual and clinical. This requires actions and strategies that promote better hygiene and proper handling of food and water, in addition to providing a safe and clean water, control food and mass vaccination of vulnerable individuals by means of campaigns and guidance in daily consultations with health professionals.
