Objective: To determine the prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in street runners, as well as its association with sex and comparison with the volume of weekly training.
Materials and Methods: This is a cross-sectional, observational study with a quantitative approach. The participants were 162 individuals of both sexes, aged between 18 and 65 years old. It was used an estructured questionnaire, developed by the researches. The questions were done consideringanthropometric characteristics, specific training and informations on the occurence of musculoskeletal injuries. The data were collected at XII Maratona de Revezamento Vanderlei Cordeiro de Lima: Pare de Fumar Correndo.
Results: The prevalence of musculoskeletal injuries in street runners was 47.5%. Specifically about the main lesions found stood out the muscles strain, ligament sprain and muscle spasm (33.33%), followed by inflammatory lesions such as plantar fasciitis, tendinitis and tibial stress syndrome (26.19%); bone lesions involving fracture, patellar chondromalacia and bone edema (15.48%); ligament injuries such as sprains and dislocation (14.29%); and other types of lesions (10.71%). It was also found significant association with sex (in males; p<0. 01) and volume of weekly training (p=0.009).
Conclusion: The results indicated that there is a prevalence of musculoskeletal lesions in street runners. The lesions are associated with sex. The runners who have more volume of weekly training showed more prevalence of lesions.
