Introduction: Breast cancer has reached high prevalence rates and is among the leading causes of death worldwide.
Objective: To describe the number of mammography units available and in use in public schools in the state of Paraná, and its distribution in relation to the female population.
Materials and Methods: Initially, it was carried out a geographical location by macro-regions in the public health services using the Master Plan for the Paraná Regionalization. After, searches on the database of the Computer Department of the Unified Health System were performed. The geographical distribution of the mammography units and the age group of the women were evaluated.
Results: The total estimated number of mammography units for the ages between 40-69 years was one for every 6,397 women, and for the ages between 50-69 years, it was one for every 7,148 women. The number of mammography units available and in use is in accordance with the number of women aged 40 to 69 years, by geographical regions. It is possible to observe the availability of a mammography unit in use for every 7,741 women.
Conclusion: The number of mammography units available and in use is distributed adequately in the state of Paraná.
