Objective: The present article aims to report the first experience by the Continuing Education service of a child-adolescent hospital in Paraná State, Brazil, using the realistic simulation as a teaching-learning methodology for the nursing staff.
Description of experience: Simulations were carried out on two consecutive days at the work settings guided by nursing instructors, who are the ward managers in the child-adolescent hospital. Six (6) distinct scenarios were prepared on the following themes: nursing care in the administration of chemotherapy drugs, nursing care with peripheral venous access and blood components, tracheostomy care and aspiration, feeding and tube care, drug administration, heavy surveillance drugs and register in nursing records. A total of 195 nursing professionals participated in the simulations. We perceived that these simulations enabled the professionals to identify and rebuild their actions by means of immediate feedback after simulations were over. The experiences also enabled those professionals to be more secure and confident in carrying out the real practice in daily work along the different care wards in the institution.
Conclusion: Realistic simulation proved to be an innovative training methodology in the institution, as it replicates real life experiences, which fostered an interactive environment among the participants and facilitated the teaching-learning process for the nursing teams who work at this child-adolescent hospital.
