Abstract

Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the nutritional status and the relation of the socioeconomic condition, demography, dietary habits and prevalence of diseases between elderly with and without social security benefits, in the city of Guarapuava, Paraná, Brazil.

Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with elderly women, which are members from five parochial groups in Guarapuava. An anthropometric evaluation was conducted by measuring the weight, height, skin folds and body circumferences. We collected data about socioeconomics, demography, alimentary frequency and the presence of diseases. The elderly women evaluated were divided in beneficiaries (BPS group) and non-beneficiaries (NBPS group).

Results: 56 elderly women were evaluated, with a mean age of 69.6±6.7 years. Beneficiary group represents 80.4%, and non-beneficiary group are 19.6% of the sample. Regarding the nutritional diagnosis through the BMI, in the general group, obesity has prevailed with 50%, followed by eutrophy with 28.6%. On the BPS group, obesity represents 44.4% and eutrophy 33.3%. Meanwhile, on the NBPS group, obesity has 72.7%. The income has showed a negative significant correlation with the triceps skin folds (p=0.008) and the subscapular skin folds (p=0.003). The prevalence of diseases was higher on the NBPS group. The alimentary habits had pointed to a preference for fat source food, sugars and fibers.

Conclusions: Overweight has showed high levels in elderly women, especially in the non-beneficiary group. The income from social security may contribute to a better nutritional status, since it´s related to other conditions that lead the elderly to a better health care.
