Abstract

The unemployment among young people has intrigued scholars worldwide. In Brazil, the problem has also drawn attention, even during the economic expansion. In general, this is not a local problem and reaches all regions of the country. Therefore, the survey assesses youth unemployment in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre (RMPA) in the period 2001 to 2010, one of the most important. It is a descriptive analysis based on data from the PED-RMPA (FEE, 2011). More specifically, determine the relationship between youth unemployment and the other age groups, adults of 25 to 39 years and of 40 years or more. The survey results show that the rate of youth unemployment in the metropolitan area of Porto Alegre was always more than twice that obtained for adults, since the smallest ratio of these occurred in 2005 and was 2.05 for the aged 25 to 39 years and 2.80 in 2002 to the range of 40 years and more. However, it was among young people who had the largest drop in unemployment (35.9%).
