The Anointing in Bethany in the Context of the Betrayal of Jesus (Mark 14,1-11): Aspects of style and narrativity

Abstract

The present article is based on the statement: Mark relates the betrayal of Jesus (14,1-2.2,10-11), interpolated by the anointing done by an anonymous woman at Bethany (14,3-9). The aim of this article is to analyze the narrative of Mark 14,1-11, considering the elements of vocabulary and style that reinforce the unity of the text. The method used was the structural analysis of the pericope, verifying stylistic and narrative aspects of the story. The narrative analysis showed the role of the characters, their plans and projects. The narrator shows a double reaction from Jesus, which forms the theological center of the account (vv. 6-9). To the silence of the woman and to the silence of Jesus in the passion, it is highlighted the speech of Jesus in behalf of the woman. The parallel of the elements of the structure in contrast to the anointing emphasizes the function of the woman and the theological scope of the text. She performed a beautiful action that will be told by future generations. His testimony will be announced with the Gospel.
