Purpose: Subjects with Down syndrome have malocclusion and muscular hypotonia, which suggest higher risk for temporomandibular disorders (TMD). This study evaluated the presence of TMD and its possible etiologic factors in subjects with Down syndrome by means of anamnesis, physical exam, and radiographs. Methods: Fifty subjects with Down syndrome were divided into two groups: 1) subjects aged between 12 and 14 years-old, and 2) subjects aged between 20 and 30 years-old. These groups were evaluated by using a structured interview, physical exam, and TMJ radiographs. Results: Signs characterized as etiologic factors for TMD were recorded for both age groups, but TMD was present only in group 2. There was association between presence of TMD and condilar hyper excursion. Conclusion: The results suggest that subjects with Down syndrome show signs and symptoms of TMD, with association with older age. Key words: Down syndrome; temporomandibular joint, temporomandibular disordersDownloads
