Nd: YAG laser effect on pit and fissures sealing: an in vivo study
Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the Nd:YAG clinical behavior in comparison with a sealant with charge in a period of 12 months where were observed; pits and fissures pigmentation, caries lesions and fracture incidence or sealant content loss. Sixty-two first and second sound premolars from 12 to 15 years of age from a public school at the city of São José dos Campos, Brazil were analyzed. The Nd:YAG laser was irradiated on the first 31 premolars in all the occlusal surface for 30 seconds at 60 mJ, 10 Hz/0.6 W (Group-1) and on the second 31 premolars the occlusal pits and fissures was sealed with the Fluorshield sealant (Group-2). After 6 months, 19.35% of cases presented a sealant content loss and incipient caries was observed in 3.22% of cases. On the other hand, 6.25% presented a beginning of carious lesions in the samples irradiated with the Nd:YAG laser. At a period of 12 months the pigmentation was observed in 32.25% of cases treated with laser and an incidence of 9.67% of incipient caries lesions was observed on both groups treated with sealant and laser irradiation. A loss of the sealant content was observed in 25.80% of the samples. It was possible to conclude that after the 12-month-evaluation period the Nd:YAG laser and the Fluorshield sealant presented similar clinical behavior at the same oral conditions where the occurrence of initial caries lesion percentage was the same for both applied prevention methods.UNITERMS: prevention; pits and fissures sealing; lasers.
