What do elder women and men think about their aging?

Abstract

This article is a part of a research developed between 2002 and 2003 in the cityof Santa Cruz do Sul in order to verify what are the social representations of the elderly for people over 60 years old. 150 elders took part on the study. 20 of them were interviewed (10 men and 10 women). The results obtained were analyzed trough the Bardin's Technique (1988). The interviewed are part of acquaintance groups of elders enrolled on the city hall and also of groups from UNISC – University of Santa Cruz do Sul and directed to this population. The results show a positive image of elderly seem as a natural process, but the women´s vision of the men of their age are negative, they say that men “are lazy, don´t take care of themselves and become inactive after the retirement”.
