Abstract

This article is the historical circumstances linked to the origins of the Social Work in Rio Grande do Sul, establishing relationships between the new profession and the social politics, that they were being implanted, in the decades of 1930 and 1940, in national and regional level. It evaluates, also, the Social Work in its recognition process as profession, giving prominence to the foundation of the School of Social Service of Porto Alegre.
