Objective: To analyze factors associated with the total amount of medications consumed by older women attending social groups for the elderly.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional epidemiological study was conducted with elderly women enrolled in the Municipal Social Development Foundation in the city of Tubarão, in south Brazil. Sociodemographic and health status variables were evaluated through questionnaires administered during interviews, and by anthropometric evaluation. The consumption of medications was assessed by using questionnaires, analysis of medical prescriptions, and medication packages. The level of physical activity was assessed using the Modified Baecke Questionnaire for the Elderly. The World Health Organization Quality of Life-Old questionnaire was used.
Results: The consumption of at least one medication was prevalent in 98.7% of the participating women, with an average consumption of 5.33 medications per person. Polypharmacy (>5 drugs) occurred in 43.8% of the cases. In the adjusted analysis there was association between medication consumption and alcohol intake (p=0.047), number of medical visits per year (p=0.001), private medical consultations (p=0.011), diagnosis of hypertension (p<0.001), diabetes mellitus (p=0.006), osteoporosis (p=0.003), and bone densitometry (p=0.031).
Conclusion: The study concluded that the consumption of medications was high among the elderly women. Furthermore, a higher consumption of medications was associated with a diagnosis of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and osteoporosis. Those who consumed a higher number of medications often sought private medical treatment and visited a physician three or more times per year.
