Objective: To describe the adherence to antiretroviral therapy (ART) for children and adolescents with HIV assisted in a drugdispensing unit belonging to a public hospital in the central region of Rio Grande do Sul.
Materials and Methods: Adherence to ART was stratified into three categories: high, regular and low; according to the frequency of drug withdrawal during the treatment of 66 patients younger than 18 years who received a liquid or solid pharmaceutical form, in the year of 2015. The age, form of transmission, responsible caregiver and level of viral load at the end of the period were verified. The data were obtained through the records of the system of control and logistics of medicines and medical records. Descriptive statistics were used and the study was approved (CAAE 47638515.3.0000.5346).
Results: The mean age was 12 years old. Parents (77%) are the main caregivers responsible for the treatment. Among patients who used ART in a solid form, adhesion was classified as high in 36%, regular in 36% and low adhesion to treatment in 28%. Only in 46% of those the viral load was undetectable. Among the 16 patients receiving the liquid pharmaceutical form, adhesion was high in 56.2%, regular in 31.3% and low adhesion in 12.5%. The viral load was undetectable in 87.5%.
Conclusion: The adherence to ART is better among children than adolescents, requiring direct follow-up for correct daily intake of medications, with greater commitment and awareness of caregivers.
