Rulling about abortion and its externalities

In Brazil the legal aspects of abortion are commonly studied from a “beginning of life” perspective. Efforts are driven to establish when life becomes a human life and the legal implications of this transition. The problem with this unfruitful perspective is that it aims to find an answer to a deeply controversial existential question: what is life? Is it a biological condition noted even in embryos? Is it the capacity to feel pain? Is it some degree of neurologic activity? Is it some degree of consciousness? Is it the capacity to survive outside the uterus? The proposition here is to avoid these controversial questions and take a pragmatic direction by focusing on the consequences of pro-life and pro-choice norms for society.
