Abstract

This study aims to understand whether the presence of disabled individuals impacts per capita household income and the likelihood of a household being in poverty or extreme poverty. Using data from the 2010 Demographic Census from IBGE (Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics), three models were estimated and compared to test the hypotheses that (1) households with at least one disabled resident will have the same probability of being in poverty and extreme poverty compared to households without disabled residents, and (2) households with at least one disabled resident will have a higher probability of having per capita income below the minimum wage (R$ 510). The results confirm the hypotheses for the models of extreme poverty and poverty, as the presence of a disabled individual in the household reduces the chances of per capita family income falling below these poverty lines. However, these households have a higher probability of having household income below the minimum wage.
