International Conflicts: Trends, Perspectives, and Violence in the 21st Century

The 21st century began as a period of transition from the long 20th century, during which war and international conflicts played a central role in geopolitical reordering, to an era characterized by increased cooperation and accelerated globalization. However, by the second decade of the new millennium, security issues had once again taken center stage in the field of International Relations. This included the resurgence of war on the European continent and escalating tensions among major powers. Interest in the use of violence for regime change, border redefinition, population control, and other objectives has also intensified. As a result, the study of international conflicts has regained prominence on the academic agenda, focusing on assessing the varied contexts in which violence emerges and identifying pathways for de-escalation.

In this light, the special issue “International Conflicts: Trends, Perspectives, and Violence in the 21st Century” offers a space for scholarly discussions on international conflicts, wars, interstate and intrastate armed conflicts, and other forms of mass collective violence. Contributions are welcome on a wide range of topics, including gender roles in conflict situations, conventional and strategic military systems, conventional warfare, nuclear deterrence, the role of digital technology in armed conflicts, irregular warfare, terrorism, the war economy, the sociology of violence in the international sphere, historical analyses of conflict development and promotion, geopolitical disputes with domestic repercussions, civil wars, the role of the UN system in war prevention, international humanitarian law in conflict zones, and related subjects.
