Abstract

This paper analyzes homicide rate in Brazil in time (2000-2010) and space (regions, states and capitals). Methodologically, we combine basic simulation, descriptive statistics, spatial analysis and an ordinary least squares regression model to examine data reported by Waiselfisz (2013). The results suggest that: (1) the homicide rate is practically constant in Brazil when dealing with aggregated data; (2) violence increased in North, Northeast and South while Southeast diminished homicides rate; (3) among top five states with major homicide increasing, three are located in Northeast (MA, AL, BA e PB) and (4) among top five capitals with greater increase, three are located in Northeast (São Luís, Maceió e Fortaleza).
