Abstract

Women incarceration became a central concern not only to non-governmental organizations but also to State. Institutionally, to establish a effective system of women protection is one of the main challenges faced by policy makers. The principal aim of this paper to identify the profile of incarcerated women in Brazil. On methodological grounds, we use descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation and spatial analysis to examine data from the Integrated Information Penitentiary System (Infopen). The results suggest that: (1) the profile of incarcerated women indicates that she has uncompleted primary education, are aged between 18 and 30 years, and they are serving time in a closed up to eight years for the crime of drug trafficking; (2) the female incarcerated population has increased over time and (3) there are clusters of geographically close states that have similar values, suggesting spatial dependence of the observations.
