Rise and decline of bailes de corredor:Ludic aspects of violence and selectivity of police repression

This article aims at analyzing the bailes de corredor (kind of funk parties where the tribes fight violently) from Rio de Janeiro, emphasizing its cultural and ritual aspect and addressing the meanings of violence in such context. For such purpose, bibliographic references presenting ethnographic reports from such parties were used as research source, held in the end of the 90s in the last century and in the beginning of the 2000s. Therefore, it may be concluded that violence for the tribes had a ludic character. The extreme game played in the dance floor reflected not only the glamorization of violence but also a broad violent social interaction spread throughout society, for which reason the critical criminology denounces the police repression that proceeded to a selection in the funk parties, those ones bailes de corredor, and its counterproductive effects such as the fight migration to other spaces and the symbolic rapprochement of funk parties to drugtrafficking.Downloads
