The role of regular physical exercise for enhancement of long-term memory in the elderly: a review of recent evidences

Abstract

Aims: We performed a systematic review of recent literature to discuss the role of physical exercise on cognition of the elderly, especially long-term memory (LTM). Source of data: The articles were sought in scientific journals indexed in Medline through PubMe and PubMed Central websites. In the final yield a total of 8 articles was selected. They show that Exercise programs improving LTM in the elderly involved aerobic activities performed 2-3 times per week. LTM improvements were correlated with brain-specific regions changing volume and depend on intensity, performed at least moderately for a minimum of 2.5 to 3 months. Exercise programs to improve LTM require strict control of exercise intensity, while different training duration and weekly sessions seem effective. Conclusions: Training focusing only in walking sessions requires further investigations to ensure its potential in improving LTM in the elderly.

Helen Lidiane Schimidt, Universidade Federal do Pampa
ossui Graduação em Fisioterapia (2011) e Mestrado em Bioquímica pela Universidade Federal do Pampa (2014). Atualmente é aluna de Doutorado em Bioquímica na Universidade Federal do Pampa (Bolsista Capes). Em 2014, conclui aperfeiçoamento em Neurofisiologia junto a University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canadá, com fomento do Emerging Leader in America Program. É membro atuante do Grupo de Pesquisa em Neuromecânica Aplicada (GNAP) da Universidade Federal do Pampa desde 2009. Seus interesses de pesquisa envolvem a neuromecânica e neurofisiologia do exercício físico no tratamento de disfunções neurológicas. Desenvolve projetos de pesquisa científica com ênfase nas adaptações neurológicas e bioquímicas resultantes do envelhecimento e de doenças neurodegenerativas.
Pâmela Billig Mello Carpes, Universidade Federal do Pampa
Concluiu graduação em Fisioterapia (2005) e aperfeiçoamento em Formação Pedagógica Habilitação Anatomia e Fisiologia Humana (800h-2005) pela Universidade de Cruz Alta; mestrado (2008, bolsa CNPq) e doutorado em Ciências Biológicas: Fisiologia pela Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul (2010, bolsa CAPES); e realizou pós-doutorado na área de Neurofisiologia na Kathieke Universiteit Leuven, Bélgica (2012, bolsa Coimbra Group). Tem experiência na área de neurofisiologia (em temas como: os efeitos do exercício físico e da separação maternal sobre o sistema nervoso, efeitos do envelhecimento sobre o SN e o envolvimento de vias neurais específicas nos processos de consolidação e extinção da memória) e ensino de fisiologia; realizando, ainda, atividades de extensão nestas áreas. Atualmente é professora adjunta de Fisiologia Humana da Universidade Federal do Pampa (UNIPAMPA), líder do Grupo de Pesquisa em Fisiologia da UNIPAMPA e orientadora no PPG Bioquímica da UNIPAMPA e no PPG Fisiologia da UFRGS. Tem experiência na área de Fisiologia, Neurociências, Ensino de Fisiologia Difusão e Popularização da Ciência. É sócia efetiva da Sociedade Brasileira de Fisiologia, da Sociedade Brasileira de Neurociência e Comportamento e membro regular da American Physiological Society.
Felipe Pivetta Carpes, Universidade Federal do Pampa
rofessor na Universidade Federal do Pampa (UNIPAMPA), onde coordena a comissão de pesquisa no Campus Uruguaiana. É docente do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Bioquímica da UNIPAMPA e do Programa de Pós-Graduação em Educação Física da UFSM. Atualmente é o Presidente da Sociedade Brasileira de Biomecânica (SBB) e é membro do Conselho Executivo da International Society of Biomechanics (ISB), na qual colabora em projetos voltados ao desenvolvimento da biomecânica em países em desenvolvimento. Desenvolve e orienta projetos com o objetivo de prover um conhecimento básico da produção e regulação de movimento no contexto do esporte e reabilitação em modelos de estudos com humanos e modelos animais, de modo o contribuir para melhora da qualidade de vida das pessoas. Coordena um programa institucional de extensão universitária, com fomento externo, voltado a promoção de exercício físico e cognitivo para idosos. Tem direcionado esforços para promover a divulgação da ciência, do ensino à distância e da inovação didático-pedagógica no ensino superior.
