INFERÊNCIA À MELHOR EXPLICAÇÃO

Resumo

RESUMO: Inferência à melhor explicação (IME) é um tipo de inferência indutiva que combina de modo particularmente interessante a prática inferencial e explicativa. De acordo com o modelo da IME, ao fazermos inferências, buscamos explicações para as evidências que dispomos, e a melhor explicação que encontrarmos é a mais aceitável, ou mesmo, a mais provável de ser verdadeira. A proposta deste trabalho é, num primeiro momento, fazer uma exposição das principais características do modelo da IME partindo, especialmente, da concepção de Peter Lipton. Já num segundo momento serão discutidas algumas das principais críticas ao modelo desenvolvidas por autores como Bas van Fraassen e Eric Barnes. Palavras-chave: Inferência. Explicação. Justificação. Abdução. ** INFERENCE TO THE BEST EXPLANATION ABSTRACT: Inference to the best explanation (IBE) is a type of inductive inference that combines in a particularly interesting way the inferential practice with explanatory practice. According to the IBE model, when one makes an inference, one looks for explanations for the evidences at disposal, and the best explanation we find is the most acceptable, or even, the more likely to be true. The purpose of this work is in a first moment make a presentation of the main features of the IBE model, especially that intended by Peter Lipton. In a second moment it will be discussed some of the main criticisms of the IBE model developed by authors such as Bas van Fraassen and Eric Barnes. Key Words: Inference. Explanation. Justification.
