Purpose: The aim of the present study was to develop a multimedia version of the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders (RDC/TMD) Axis II Questionnaire in Portuguese language. Methods: To build the multimedia instrument the software Flash MX 2004 for Windows OS was used. The study group comprised 17 patients with signs and symptoms of Temporomandibular Disorders (TMD), who were evaluated at the Orofacial Pain Control Center, School of Dentistry of the University of Pernambuco, between February and April 2006. Data collection was performed using the following instruments: Simplified Anamnestic Index (SAI) and RDC/TMD Axis II multimedia version, which was subjected to a face validation. The first version was evaluated in a pretest phase to elaborate the final version in Portuguese. Results: The first multimedia version had 31 major questions divided into 86 subgroups. For the final version, 12 questions (14%) had to be modified or received additional explanations to ensure full understanding by the patients. Conclusion: The development of the multimedia version in Portuguese was satisfactory. The face validation of this RDC/TMD Axis II multimedia followed the methods proposed in the literature and allowed the development of a potential useful instrument for clinical and epidemiological TMD studies in Brazil. Key words: Diagnosis, computer-assisted; temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome; validation studiesDownloads
