Occupational Dentistry in the hospital setting

Purpose: To report the statistics of dental procedures and absenteeism of employees in a division of occupational medicine and health safety of a large hospital. Case description: A retrospective study of the cases recorded by the Serviço Especializado em Segurança e Medicina do Trabalho (SESMT) da Santa Casa de Misericórdia de São Paulo, São Paulo, SP, from 1995 to 2006. The hospital has approximately 8,000 employees, who are users of SESMT. The results showed 24,056 dental appointments during the study period: pre-admittance examination (9,120 appointments), periodic routine examination (2,915 appointments), and routine appointments due to oral complaints (12,021 appointments). Conclusion: Occupational Dentistry in the hospital setting has an important role in prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral alterations that may interfere in the employee quality of life, absenteeism rates, and hospital productivity.
