The criosurgery as alternative treatment of Xeroderma Pigmentosum
Keywords:
cryosurgery, cryotherapy, xeroderma pigmentosumAbstract
The cryosurgery consists on treating pathologic skin and mucosa lesions by intense freezing of the affected area. Its indication must obey some criteria, such as the lesion’s macroscopic aspect, size, histological type, topographic site and patient age, being indicated for treatment of lesions caused by Xeroderma Pigmentosum (XP). The aim of this study was to demonstrate the authors experience besides the cryosurgery on treatment of 12 patients with skin and mucosa lesions associated to XP, in a 25-year-period, discussing its main applications and success and unsuccess aspects. From April 1977 to April 2002 (twenty five years), were treated by cryosurgery, at CEON/HUOC/UPE, Head and Neck Surgery Department of Hospital de Câncer de Pernambuco and the authors’ private clinic, 1900 (one thousand nineteen hundred) cases in patients with benign and malignant skin and mucosa lesions on the head and neck. Twelve patients (0,7%) had XP. Sixty six percent were male and all cases occurred at the 1st and 2nd decades of life. The cryosurgery is an excellent alternative method for XP treatment, in all cases that have indication criteria. UNITERMS: cryosurgery; cryotherapy; xeroderma pigmentosumDownloads
