The manifestation of the dental caries between children in a public school of Niterói, Rio de Janeiro, in 1990 and 2005

Abstract

Objective: describes the manifestations of dental caries on students aged 4 to 12 years in a public school of Niterói-RJ, in 1990 and 2005. Method: The sample consisted of 300 children who were divided in two groups (G1: 1990 and G2: 2005). The first data had been collected from a survey carried out in 1990, part of a School Health Program. The data of 2005 had been gotten in a bucal examination clinical carried out in classroom, that followed the same way that was done previously. Arithmetic means values, median, and minimum and maximum values regarding caried, lost and filled teeth were obtained (Mann-Whitney test). Results: Caries manifestation observed in 2005 decreased in comparison to that of 1990. However, caries occured in both boys and girls in the same manner, regardless of the year of the study, as no gender differences were found. Similary, no differences regarding the mean number of lost and filled teeth were found between the two periods of study. It is possible to observe that dental caries were the most expressive aspect both in 1990 and 2005. Conclusion: The educative and preventive programs in the school are important, but only individual habits do not have to be considered, however to adjust them it reality of the population, since health is an important measure of quality of life.
