Avaliação longitudinal da fluoretação da água de abastecimento público de Teresina-Piauí
Abstract
A concentração de fluoreto na água de abastecimento publico deve ser mantida dentro de uma faixa ideal para contemplar o binômio riscos/benefícios desta medida de saúde publica. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi monitorar, mensalmente, a concentração de fluoreto na água de abastecimento público de Teresina, Piauí, Brasil, assim como validar a importância do heterocontrole. Para a coleta das amostras, foram selecionados aleatoriamente cinco bairros representativos das cinco regiões que compõem a cidade. As coletas foram realizadas, mensalmente, dos meses de junho-2000 a maio-2001, e as análises foram feitas utilizando-se eletrodo específico. Concentrações abaixo do limite inferior em termos de prevenção de cárie (0,60 ppm) foram encontradas, assim como elas diferiram entre os pontos de coleta. Concluiu-se que a população de Teresina esteve submetida a concentrações de fluoreto na água de abastecimento público inferiores à recomendada e irregularmente distribuídas. Isto enfatiza a importância do heterocontrole da concentração de fluoreto na água como medida de vigilância sanitária.

SUMMARY
Therapeutic effect of fluoride depends on a continuous and adequate level of that ion in drinking water. The aim of this study was to monitor (check) the level of fluoride in dinking water on a monthly basis in Teresina Piauí Brasil, as well as, validating the importance of its heterocontrol. Water samples were collected from five diferents areas of the city corresponding to the respective geographical areas. They were made monthly from june-2000 to may-2001. The analysis was made in the Biochemistry Laboratory of the University of Dentistry of Piracicaba (UNICAMP), using the elctrometric method (Orion 701-A/9609 Orion Electrode). After 12 months the fluoride level of the samples was considered insufficient. It can be concluded that population of Teresina had been irregularly and inadequately exposed to fluoride levels in its drinking water, therefore, heterocontrol is important to maintain an accurate fluoridation program of public drinking water supply.
