E a literatura brasileira contemporânea?

Theorizing about contemporary literature equals to run the risk of ending a discussion exchanging a few punches. Virginia Woolf had already forewarned us of the hazards of this type of literature, in which we enter minefield where "two critics at the same table at the same moment will pronounce completely different opinions about the same book." (WOOLF: 2007, 104). Without being able to conjugate the traditional value judgment in canonized works, literary criticism, driven away from a coercive and consensual practice winds up venturing itself towards the temporariness of its readings. No wonder the critics "inevitably come to blows" (WOOLF: 2007, 104). Once we accept navigating through the contemporary, we assume the risk of a constant knowing-in-process that more often than not takes a route of collision and exposure, because the same book may be seen as a long-lasting contribution to literature as well as sheer miscellaneous of pretentious mediocrity. A series of questions begin to afflict this critical perspective: When does the contemporary start? What is the dominant aesthetic characteristic of contemporary Brazilian literature? To whom are we contemporary?

Also, what about the contemporary Brazilian literature? Where does it stand? What does it look like? In events and class lectures, not rarely we hear the question "Hey, professor, so what is the identity of contemporary Brazilian literature?" In this point, we need to design a reflection that is not addressed by the systems of similarity or by the supposed fixity of contemporary poetics. In the realm of contemporary literature, we come across plural aesthetic projects, heterogeneous stressed quadrants that may range from the mutilation-in-word in Elvira Vigna all the way to the respiration-in-word in Amilcar Bettega. Therefore, we may have to answer that the contemporary Brazilian literature is constellatory in nature. After all a constellatory epistemology introduces itself against the moment of Cartesian subjectivity; it is less concerned with owning the phenomenon than with releasing it in its own sensitive being and preserving its disparate elements in its completely irreducible heterogeneity. The constellation refuses to grab on to a metaphysical essence, and articulates its components in an open way. As noted by Terry Eagleton, in his beautiful analysis of the work of Walter Benjamin, the concept of constellation is perhaps the "most strikingly original attempt in the modern period to break with traditional versions of totality. It represents a determined resistance to the more paranoid forms of totalizing thought on the part of thinkers who nevertheless set their face against any mere empiricist celebration of the fragment". The contemporary-constellatory Brazilian literature breaks with traditional versions of totality, as the lethal continuum of history seems to be shaken by the chips and shrapnel of an aesthetics in constant parallax, from Intimism to Realism, from the local to the urban, from the fantastic to the marginal.
