************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************************

Argumentative senses for the Word “unemplyed” in Bertold Brecht’s poem

Abstract: The following paper aims at revealing meanings for the word “unemployed”, in Bertold Brecht’s poem. Based on Marion Carel’s Theory of Semantic Blocks (1995), we intended to analyze parts of Brecht’s poem “This Unemployment” and, eventually, establish meanings for the chosen word. In order to do so, we needed to make a brief research throughout the theory of Argumentation within Language (ADL), proposed by Ducrot and Anscombre (1983), in the two phases that preceded Theory of Semantic Blocks. Later, the article presents the Theory of Semantic Blocks itself and, when analyzing the selected parts of the poem, we applied its concepts, more precisely, internal and external argumentation notions. Through this study, it was possible to understand that the meaning found in the dictionary is not enough to establish structural and contextual sense in the enunciation. Thus, it is important to consider the possible continuations that can be found through argumentative chaining, Ducrot and Carel’s object of study.

Keywords: Theory of Semantic Blocks; Sense of Unemployed; Internal Argumentation; External Argumentation; Brecht’s Poem.
ER -
