ABSTRACT
The present article discusses the inclusion of indigenous people in highereducation, from the perspective of social inclusion, arguing the consequent necessity ofaffirmative polices in education, in the context of a multicultural country such as Brazil.Initially questioning the problematic of the historical exclusion to which indigenouspeople were, to a large extent, submitted, the text suggests a reflection that problematizesthe presence of students until now considered as “strangers” to the academic environment(such as indigenous people, among others). Besides emphasizing the access andpermanence of these “new students”, the article proposes the challenge of thinking aboutinstitutional initiatives that accept as a possibility the dialogue among differentknowledges. In other words, a process of inclusion that welcomes “the different”, openingitself to questioning and necessary changes.
Key words – Indigenous people; higher education; cultural diversity.
