ELEMENTOS DE TEOLOGIA POLÍTICA EM QUATRO CARTAS ENTRE MACEDÔNIO E AGOSTINHO DE HIPONA

RESUMO: A partir da análise da correspondência entre Agostinho, bispo de Hipona e Macedônio, vicarius (governador romano) da África de 413 a 414 d.C., observa-se a fundamentação teológica e moral da função coercitiva do Estado. As cartas analisadas procuram conciliar a necessidade de ordem e segurança do Estado com a doutrina cristã do perdão. A influência cristã no direito romano acarreta uma visão da pena como forma de penitência e da reclusão como uma oportunidade de recuperação dos criminosos. Palavras-chave: Agostinho. Macedônio. Teologia Política. ** POLITICAL THEOLOGY ELEMENTS IN FOUR LETTERS BETWEEN MACEDONIUS AND AUGUSTINE OF HIPPO ABSTRACT: From the analysis of the correspondence between Augustine, bishop of Hippo, and Macedonius, the vicarius (Roman governor) of Africa from 413 to 414 A.D., it may be observed the theological and moral fundamentals of the coercive function of the State. The analyzed letters aim at conciliating the need for order and safety of the State with the Christian doctrine of forgiveness. The Christian influence on Roman Law leads to a view of the punishment as a way of penitence and of reclusion as an opportunity of criminal’s rehabilitation. Key Words: Augustine. Macedonius. State.
