Abstract

The growth of the elderly population has led to the search for the maintenance or improvement of cognitive performance and quality of life in aging. This review aimed at verifying the impact of linguistic-based cognitive training on the cognition (language, working, episodic and semantic memories and executive functions) of typical older adults and those with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) or Alzheimer’s Disease (AD). The search for articles was carried out in PubMed, Embase, PsycINFO, Scopus and Web of Science databases, following the PRISMA procedures. A total of 408 articles were identified and, after applying the inclusion/exclusion criteria, 13 were selected for review. The results indicate that in two studies with healthy older adults there were improvements in the constructs trained in the experimental groups; among the studies with neuroatypical elderly participants, better performance in post intervention testing was verified in six studies. In the remaining studies, the results of improvement in cognitive constructs were partial, or verified only during testing, not in follow-up. Cognitive training focused on language using linguistic stimuli has shown to be efficient for cognitive improvement, both in neurotypical and in MCI and AD populations. Studies are still inconclusive regarding the optimal total training duration, the ideal frequency and intensity of training, their modality (online or face-to-face), as well as their benefits according to the participants’ profile.
