This paper discusses the divergences and convergences between Gadamer’s Philosophical Hermeneutics and Habermas’s Critical Theory. In this effort, a brief theoretical-philosophical itinerary was traced on the comprehension of reality, sometimes in terms of the Habermasian communicative action, sometimes from the self-understanding reflection of the Gadamerian existence. What are the limits identified by Habermas about Gadamer’s hermeneutics? What criticisms are made by Gadamer regarding Habermas’s communicative reason? Is it possible to observe any unity between the two theoretical approaches or are they just diametrically opposed? It follows that the transformation Habermas aims for is not intended to totally nullify the traditional knowledge retained by Gadamerian thinking, just as Gadamer’s traditional knowledge does not entirely rule out the possibilities for change advocated by the emancipatory bias of the Habermasian theory.
