Abstract

The toothbrush might become a dissemination source of oral cavity microorganisms. The aim of this study was to evaluate, in vivo, the mutans group streptococci (MGS) contamination on Monobloc® toothbrushes, that they were used once for 2.0min, in function of 2 different types of dentifrice. The randomized clinical trial was realized in 3 steps (I, II, III) by 52 pharmacy students at Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences of Ribeirão Preto – USP. At step I, the students did toothbrushing without dentifrice. At step II, they used Sorriso Super Refrescante® dentifrice without antimicrobial agent, and at step III, Colgate Tripla Ação® dentifrice with triclosan antimicrobial agent. Only 30 (57.7%) from 52 students were considerate for this study. At the end of each thoothbrushing, the toothbrushes were stored in upright position for 1h and after they were put in test tubes with CaSa B culture media. After the incubation period, the number of colony/biofilm forming units on toothbrushes “spears” was examined under a stereoscope microscope. MGS biofilm was present in 22 (73.3%) toothbrushes at step I, in 4 (18.2%) at step II, and none at step III. In conclusion, there was no significant statistical difference between dentifrice results (p > 0.05). Both using reduced MGS biofilm formation on toothbrushes “spears” (p < 0.05). UNITERMS: biofilms; dentifrices; toothbrushing
